Hegemonic Silencing
Definition
The use of power by the hegemony to silence questions/dissent that challenge the authority of the hegemony
This is a common practice in any hegemony, but in the context of this Wiki it is pertinent that Education makes use of this many ways - students are not allowed to question challenge teachers; teachers are not allowed to question policy makers; no one is allowed to question that state's control of education.
History
In a post on Facebook, ven. Kalubowila Ananda used the label "emotional blackmail" to describe “පොඩිකාලේ ඉඳන් බුද්ධාගම ගැන මට ගැටලු තිබුනා, ඒවා ප්රශ්න කරාම වැඩිහිටියෝ, ස්වාමීන්වහනේලා කිව්වේ ඔයවගේ ප්රශ්න අහන්න එපා, පවු සිද්ධවෙනවා, අපායේ යනවා, ආර්ය් උපවාද වෙනවා කියලා... මේක බුද්දාගමට නෙවෙයි හැම ආගමකටම පොදු තත්වයක්. ප්රශ්න කරන අයව මානසිකව බියවැද්දීම” [Loose Translation: "When I was a child I had concerns about Buddhism. When I questioned them, elders, clergy told me not ask such questions, as it is sin, I will go to Hell. Scaring people who ask questions is an issue common to all religions"
Sifaan Zavahir proposed Hegemonic Silencing as a better term.
